Volunteering

Mapping is a great way to build community. Your community! And the Mapping Centre is a great place to volunteer your time and effort to keep communities on the path towards sustainability. You'll learn lots and take away skills and a network that you'll use long after you're done at UVic.
We have ~101 projects underway - all of them exciting! Please contact the Mapping Centre lead, Ken Josephson, to see how you can help out. It is easiest to contact Ken via email at: kjoseph@uvic.ca. You are also always welcome to stick your head into the Mapping Centre - Social Science & Mathematics Building B209.
Below is a list of general tasks that we often need help with. Explore our "Job" Postings list to the left to see where we currently need assistance.
- Mapping: add new map sites to the UVic Community Green Map or the Greater Victoria Community Green Map
- Graphics: help us out designing new icons
- Engagement: learn how to lead mapping sessions by volunteering to help us as we go out into communities
- Cartography: help us out laying out new maps for folks on campus and around the Capital Regional District

Ian - Web Mapping Researcher! |
Ian is a graduate student at UVic Geography. His research is in usability design for on-line map tools. One of his case studies will involve the design, building and user accessability testing of an "international connections map" for the whole University of Victoria. He is using Mapping Resource Centre resources for this experiment and has been giving back to the community in the form of instructions and how-to pages. In a few months, Ian will join Wendy as our go-to folks for linux and Drupal questions! |

Wendy: Web Wizard! |
Wendy has been helping us out since April 2009, when she participated in the Community Mapping Course-I. She's been learning Drupal fast and a lot of the posts in the Resources & Projects are by her (transferring material from the old Common Ground website). We are very lucky to have Wendy volunteering with us. If you want to learn some Drupal - talk to Wendy! |

Tanja: Course Assistant for Community Mapping-I |
Tanya G, a third year Geography student at UVic, was looking for some experience related to GIS and Cartography. Tanya helped set up the classroom and greeted students during our first ever Continuing Studies course (March 2009). Thanks, T! Rachel, Tori and Judith: ES481 Student Leaders Extrordinaire! |
Rachel M, Tori B and Judith A were the liaison and resource persons for the ES481 web mapping for restoration project. They each coordinated groups of 3-6 fellow students while communicating with Brenda and Ken to keep the site looking cohesive. They also learned a fair bit about the Drupal content management system and helped with admin details and general questions. Read more about ES481-S09 projects and mapping |

Tatiana and Erin: Community Engagement Experts |
Tatiana C and Erin N volunteered at almost all of the events that we held in 2008 leading up to the launch of the UVic Community Green Map. Tatiana went on to use community mapping in her course work, when she led a mapping session with Tla-o-qui-aht Elders in Tofino, looking at the traditional use of a tidal flats area. Thanks for all your great work Erin and Tatiana! |
|
Blair: Our mapping technician |
Blair U was a 4th year Geography student who helped out at several mapping events in 2008. He did a lot of work cleaning up the UVic Green Map postings. Thanks, Blair! |

A big thanks to Hawley B, Neil N, Melissa H and Manuel M (see photo left with Mapping Centre Lead Ken Josephson and Prof. Rosaline Canessa) for their support for the Creatures of Habitat - Mapping Event
