UVic CMC Visits Melbourne Green Mappers
In late October 2009, I was in Melbourne Australia after presenting at an open source mapping conference and had the chance to meet some great Green Mappers.
The pictures below show my visit to a very cool urban garden project called the "Urban Reforestation Garden" located in Victoria Harbour, Docklands. Visit their website at www.urbanreforestation.com.
Creating green space in the heart of what was once a very industrial area of Melbourne. Love the idea that they may actually outgrow their space and spread the garden onto a barge to float alongside.
If you visit, here's the location: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=docklands,+m...
Their very cool initiative reminded me of Victoria (BC)'s wonderful LifeCycles Project Society (www.lifecyclesproject.ca) and the amazing projects LifeCycles does in our region to promote food security and healthy communities. This includes the amazing Fruit Tree Project (http://lifecyclesproject.ca/initiatives/fruit_tree/).
It also reminded me that there is a cool food/mapping initiative that Geomemes helped to build. This site lets people around the world get together and grow food. It also let's local foodies raise a little money. Check it out at: http://sharingbackyards.com/
Here are some pics of the Urban Reforestation Garden:
Word is that after the Garden is fully underway, they are going to re-do the Mebourne Green Map. Very cool.
Thank-you to Damien, Emily and the rest of the Crew for the hospitality!
Charles
